Area Festival 2009 Round Up

What a show.

"Superb, by far and away the most professional venue I have visited in the whole of the country!"

4 days, 16 classes, 18 judges and most importantly 240 entrants made our first Area Festival a massive success.

With technical innovations as well as a world class arena and the usual Kingwood hospitality even the weather didn’t dare spoil the event!

Still, the most important aspect of any competition is the actual competition and this was hotly contested in all classes regardless of entry numbers.

Elementary Open

First off, the Elementary Open competition with 10 starters. Local rider Anna Belton (of Albion Saddles fame) and her ride Fabrento topped this hotly contested class. With just 7 marks separating 1st to 6th a score of 66.76% was just enough to take the class.

Medium Restricted

A convincing win for local rider Emma Bates and Tosca who carries on her Area Festival tradition (having won the Novice Restricted at Beaver in 2008)

Medium Open

2 miles away is about as local to a show as you can get, and Sam Fish also continued her excellent Area Festival tradition on the super Gunstone If Only

Sam Fish and Gunstone If Only

Advanced Medium

Slightly disappointing starters, with 10 entered only 4 managed to come to the start of the competition. However, this did nothing to lower the standard of this class, with the winner of the Open section, Clare Ballantyne (local list 3 judge and BHSI) storming through on 66.47% more than 20 marks ahead of the rest of the field. Lisa Garland and Assention took the restricted section of the class.

Prix St Georges

The PSG class produced an undisputed winner in Alexandra Kipping and Marksquerade. No stranger to the big occasion, having competed in international young riders classes, Alexandra posted a 4% leading score.

Judge Steph Cooper with the winner Alexandra Kipping and Marksquerade

Elementary Restricted

Early starts all round and with just 20 marks separating the top 9, and several ties along the way the competition was hot. Kathryn Miller and Alexander 2nd were eventual winners, with little to separate the top 3.

Judge Carol Thornton with the winner Kathryn Miller and Alexander 2nd

Novice Restricted

To say there was going to be a class was an understatement. 37 started in the end, and running for over 6 hours the judges deserved a medal.

Hannah Markham and Macklin Dramero led from very early on, only to be pipped to the post at the eleventh hour by an excellent ride Gaynor Moorcroft and Kwaliteit finishing just 2 marks ahead on 70%.

"I have just come down to earth!!! I would like to say a huge THANKYOU for making my first major competition on Mik a fantastic event. I could not believe it when I had won!!! Novice restricted out of a huge class (no pressure)! The venue was fantastic the staff great. Thank you again. Gaynor"

An excellent competition and well deserved results for the qualifying riders.

Judges Judith Harris and Karen Barker with the winner of the Novice marathon Gaynor Moorcroft and Kwaliteit

Novice Open

An early start again and despite the early morning fog, the competition began in earnest on time! Mel Rowley and Whistlers Rufus led for a good 2 hours Donnersox and Chris Pugh posted a good score of 68.97% to take the class.

Preliminary

With such a huge entry the Preliminary class was split into two sections.

Winner of the first section was Celia Tebbs and Lincourt Sar on 69.09%

Felicity Scott with Celia Tebbs and Lincourt Sar

Second section winner was Sally Hudson Lund and Tiamo III on 70%, also taking the Worshipful Company of Saddlers prize to the highest owner/rider combination in the Prelim Class

Jenny Ward with the section winner and WCSM award winner Sally Hudson Lund and Tiamo III

In Summary

A great but tiring 4 days of dressage. Entries higher than any other festival in 2008, which shows the growth at this level of the sport. And sport it was as some really excellent athletes competed seriously for the qualifying spots.

A pleasure to have all the competitors at the centre, old and new faces mixed and shared experiences.

A really great experience for the whole team at Kingswood - we really did try to put in that little bit of extra effort and it is most pleasing to see it pay off.

I think if I may I will sign off with a competitor comment which just about sums up the general feedback received

"Kingswood has exceptional facilities, especially surfaces. The area festival gave it a chance to show what it is truely capable of producing as a high end show facility from all aspects. Well done all concerned."

iPhone enabled site launchedKingswood launches an iPhone web app

Kingswood EC has developed the first phase of its iPhone web application.

Our iPhone specific website is available at www.kingswoodec.com/iphone and offers full screen mode browsing of shows and schedules.

"Depending on the uptake of this we will continue to develop on this platform," said Rob Lickley

"Although iPhones cope very well with the existing site, when browsing on GSM networks this cut down version loads extremely quickly"

In addition, the cafe is now equipped with BT OpenZone, so 02 users can browse the internet from their telephone. This service is also available as a cost option for clients wishing to work in the cafe during shows.
